Hello all! Within just a few short days, HHS will be buzzing with teachers and students alike. I cannot tell you how excited we are to welcome our nearly 500 students back into the building. My hope is that the summer days gave each of you and your families time to reconnect and rejuvenate before returning to our normal school-time routines. Most of our teachers have devoted a portion of their summer to becoming better for our students. For example, all of our 9th and 10th grade English, Math, Science, and Social Studies teachers received four days of A+ College Ready training specifically designed for their content area. Also, several of our Career Technology teachers have broadened their knowledge through summer conferences. It is exciting to see their devotion and desire for greatness! There’s no doubt that our teachers’ quest for excellence will have a huge impact on our students this year.

As we prepare to begin the 18-19 school year, here are a few reminders to ensure we all have a smooth start:

-Locker/Parking/Schedule Day is Monday, August 6th 12:00-3:00pm. (Lockers and Parking Passes are $10 each) Teachers will be in their classrooms at this time. Students and parents are welcome to walk the halls and become familiar with the flow of their day. Need help with Lunch Information or Scheduling? These can be handled this day also!

-School begins Wednesday, August 8th at 8:00am. Students may be dropped off beginning at 7:20am and will begin reporting to the gym for our opening assembly at 7:45am.

-Bus riders will enter campus from the Science parking lot and should make their way to the cafeteria until the morning bells sound.

-Car riders will enter campus from the front drive and should also gather in the cafeteria before school begins. Parents, please refrain from using cell phones in the drop off lanes, as students from the front parking lot will be crossing in front of you.

-Student Handbooks and Code of Conduct will go home the first day of school. Please read both documents! They contain great information for you and your child regarding the expectations of being a Haleyville Lion.

-Open House (August 16th 5:00-7:00pm) this year will look a bit different. We will still open the doors for parents and students to mingle with teachers and visit classrooms. However, we will also have breakout sessions specifically designed to help you and your child navigate his/her year. We will also host a Club Fair in the Commons. Stay tuned for a full schedule!

Parents: you are part of our team! Without you, we cannot build a plan specially designed for your child. Our goal is to work with you, throughout your child’s high school years, so he/she is ready for their entry into the world. As the year passes, we encourage you to get involved, whether through Coffee with the Principal (held the first Friday of each month), Parent Teacher Conferences, a parent organization through band or athletics, or by simply emailing a teacher regarding assignments. Your voice is important! Stay connected via Facebook (@HaleyvilleHSLions) and Twitter (@HaleyvilleLions). Search for anything Lions related via our hashtag #HHSROAR.

Thank you in advance for the opportunity to make this journey with your child. It’s not a role I take lightly. My pledge is that each and every student who enters the door of HHS will be loved to our greatest ability and educated to their greatest potential. If I can ever be of service, do not hesitate to call or email. HHS 205-486-3122; email emccoy@havc.k12.al.us.

Let’s be our best, nothing less!

Dr. McCoy
