It is less than a month from the start of school and less than 2 weeks from Tax Free Shopping Weekend, so we wanted to start sending out information from each school to help you prepare for the 2018-2019 school year at Haleyville City Schools. Each principal will be submitting a Back to School blog post which we will share. We are busy planning for an awesome year and want each of our students to be as prepared as possible and know the expectations of HCS.

On behalf of the Teachers and Staff of Haleyville Middle School, I would like to welcome you back for the 2018-2019 school year. It is going to be a good year at school, and we are glad to have our former students back and we welcome our incoming 6th graders.

We have set new goals for this coming year that are going to be challenging, but with hard work, we will be successful.

One goal is to improve our performance in the classroom. This summer our teachers attended a workshop called A Plus, which will help them make their classroom more rigorous and challenging for the students. Instead of memorizing facts, the students will now get a better understanding of how something works and why. This is an opportunity for students to be more successful academically in learning and understanding material.

A second goal is to incorporate a new program, Edgenuity, which will offer enrichment opportunities or remediation for students depending on their needs. We will have a 32 minutes period twice weekly for Edgenuity. During this time students can receive extra academic encouragement or stimulation they need.

A third goal is to improve student attendance. Being in school every day is very important. A Student cannot learn the material If he/she is not in school. We are forming a committee to communicate with parents and students when attendance concerns arise. Last year our attendance was 96.07%. We need to do better and we can.

We have two new teachers to welcome to our staff. Mrs. Abby Brown Huff will be a special education teacher and will be coaching the junior varsity volleyball team. Mrs. Amy Farris is a returning teacher to us in 7th grade English from 10th grade English at the high school. We are excited to have these two on board.

Locker day will be August 7 from 12:00 - 3:00. Locker rental is $5.00. Students’ schedules will be ready for pick up on this date. This is a day to drop off supplies, become familiar with your locker combination, and walk your schedule. Our HMS Open House where parents can come to meet all of your child(s) teachers will be the first Monday, August 13th (after school starts) from 5:00 - 7:00. There will be no set schedule, which should give flexibility to visit teachers at your convenience.

We hope all of you had a good summer and are looking forward to another successful school year. Remember, you can get regular updates on happenings at Haleyville Middle School on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/haleyvillemiddleschool/
