After careful consideration and many discussions with schools and organizations across the state, Haleyville City Schools will not dismiss early on August 21st, 2017 for the solar eclipse. We believe that this is a historical learning experience for our students and want to plan activities that will enhance our students understanding of this event. We are taking precautions as you will see below and we are are providing some strict guidance for our teachers and staff- realizing that eye protection is a necessity. Your HHS and HMS students will be bringing notes tomorrow that must be returned. These notes give the student permission to go outside and view the solar eclipse with the NASA approved solar eclipse glasses that were generously donated by 3M. If you would rather your student not participate, we will have areas in the school where students can watch a NASA live viewing of the eclipse. HES will not be going outside to view the eclipse, but will be viewing it on the NASA site as well. You will see below that there are options for checking our HES students so that they can view the event live with a parent. HES students will also be given the NASA approved glasses.
HES:
If parents would like to check out your student to view the eclipse live, we will allow students to be checked out between 12:00-1:00. Please send the form back by Friday if you will be checking our student out so we can prepare to expedite that process. We also encourage you and your student to wear the NASA solar eclipse glasses that the school will provide for your student that have been generously donated by 3M. (Form going home August 16, 2017)
HMS/HHS:
This is a historical event that we can use to enhance many standards in our high school curriculum. 3M has generously donated NASA solar eclipse certified viewing glasses for each student to wear as they view the eclipse. HMS/HHS will go outside for a brief period of time when we can view the eclipse and then return to the classroom. Due to some eye protection concerns, we will have very strict rules for students to follow during this time. If students are not following the rules or if you do not sign the permission form, students will view the event live via NASA’s online viewing tools in common areas around the school. The permission form needs to be returned by Friday, August 18th.
